LLMs and the ELIZA effect

I was invited to give a lecture about ChatGPT a UMass First Year Seminar entitled Exploring Modern Computing. It was challenging to come up with a way to share meaningful insights about LLMs with a group that had limited programming experience.

I decided to present at early chatbot -- ELIZA -- whose inner workings are accessible with just basic programming knowledge. The parallels between this 1960s system and modern LLMs (image below) were surprisingly illuminating!

Thank you Shahrooz Pouryousef for this opportunity. I was blown away by the insightful questions the students had about LLMs in society.

new, accessible ways of interacting, uncannily humanlike output, and
   breathless press coverage.
